Brookside Housing Developments

Michaels Development Company partnered with the firm Stan & Nick worked to design 222 new apartments and a management building for the Brookside neighborhood. The project includes all-new roads, utilities, and a redesigned street grid that promotes a walkable, safe community and reconnects Brookside with nearby Hamden.

Located in northwest New Haven near West Rock Ridge State Park and Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), Brookside has transformed from its former mid-century brick “barrack-style” buildings, which had fallen into disrepair and were demolished due to environmental hazards.

Collaborative Planning
The new development was shaped through collaboration with key stakeholders, including SCSU, former residents, and neighbors. A series of design workshops ensured community input guided the project’s vision.

Project Highlights

• 222 Total Units: 202 rental apartments and 20 affordable homeownership units
• Architectural Styles: Inspired by five New Haven vernacular styles—Italianate, Victorian, National, Arts & Crafts, and Colonial
• Varied Housing Types: From duplexes to six-unit buildings, each with unique colors and design features
• Direct Street Access: All units have entrances that open to the street, with porches and covered entries enhancing safety and community feel

Sustainable Features
Brookside incorporates Energy Star appliances, bioswales for stormwater management, and meets “Green Communities” standards with energy-efficient systems, water-saving measures, and use of local materials.
