461 Lexington Avenue
Located on redeveloped property within the General Retail District along Lexington Avenue in Mount Kisco, NY, this proposed two-story office building for a prominent local wine distributor is inspired by the inherent majesty of industrial warehouses of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This building features a spacious, open workspace environment flooded with natural daylight through insulated steel windows; further enveloped in exposed tumbled brick walls, reclaimed timber decking, polished concrete floors and blackened structural steel elements.
Open steel and timber stairs elegantly unite the volumes of the first and second levels, where occupants ascend to a lofty and expansive conference, lounge and kitchen area. Stone counters and stainless-steel appliances transform the kitchen into an inviting entertaining area, while large sliding barn doors allow for privacy to the conference and lounge areas when required. Plain, white partitions bounding service spaces act as reflective backdrops against the raw brick walls, creating a gallery-like space.
Barn-like interior pendant light fixtures and exterior wall sconces compliment the rawness of the building’s industrial qualities, while exposed spiral metal ductwork and piping accentuate the building’s internal mechanical systems. Handicapped accessibility within the building is thorough yet efficiently integrated.
Site planning goals included the mitigation of impervious paving with porous materials and storm water planters, in addition to the maximization of indigenous landscaping and retention of existing trees. A drive connecting Lexington Avenue to the rear parking area allows for the building to identify as a prominent landmark, while the corbeled brick banding and gabled roof maintain the building’s continuity within the residential fabric and scale of the neighborhood.
Overall, this building design strives to successfully balance the mass and openness of its architecture, creating an inspiring and invigorating place to work.
As project architect for Di Biase & Filkoff Architects PC, Nick developed the design and construction drawings for this project, as well as coordinated multiple engineering disciplines during this process. Close coordination with the local architectural review board was performed to ensure Town aesthetic standards were complied with.
